Off to Market

I’m on a jet plane to NYC for Market for a week. Between visiting Javits Center, random hotels, and company showrooms, this is a twice-yearly ritual for me to shop for the following season (in this case, Spring 2012), see new product, discover new lines, eat at a fancy restaurant or 5, have a cigar or 5 (hopefully at the Grand Havana Room this time, and hopefully always after a big meal), catch a show, and eat some pizza.

I’m more excited than usual for this trip. All the usual suspects will be seen: Bills Khakis, Peter Millar, Agave, Jan Leslie, Robin Rotenier, and others. This season will be my first trip to the Barbour showroom. We have Barbour coming in for this Fall, but that order was placed from the catalog; Spring will be done from the showroom, and I really look forward to it.

Thursday morning, I’ll be heading up to Toronto, Canada to visit the factory of Antonio Valente. The line was first introduced to me as a "custom sport shirt" line that we could offer in our Bespoke store (think "shirts I would wear to a nice bar or restaurant on a Saturday night"). I was blown away by the options and details one could customize. But they have similar capabilities with jackets and trousers, so I figured a visit to the factory would be the best way to truly understand what can be done. A couple dozen shirts are already being made for the store which should arrive soon, but I suspect a bigger order will be forthcoming.

There are a couple other surprises, many of which won’t be announced
till later this year, or in the spring, but this is shaping up to be a
great Market. I’ll try to check in with any updates from the road…
