Labor Day came and went yesterday, which gives those that know no other rules of fashion other than "no white after Labor Day" to make snide comments to those that choose to wear white will it’s still hot outside. Indeed, in my experience, the people most likely to remind me of the rule are those that abide by no recognizable rules of fashion all year long.
So it was with a huge sigh of relief that the Magnificent Bastard also endorsed wearing white after Labor Day in a post today outlining the White Pants Doctrine complete with latitudinal guidelines.
Two years ago, Time magazine provided a decent explanation as to why the rule exists in the first place. It further notes that the 2004 edition of Emily Post’s Etiquette –the manners bible" — says it’s ok to wear white after Labor Day. Only the Pope has remained silent, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen him in white after Labor Day.
Money quote from the Time article: "Fashion rules are meant to be broken by those who can pull it off." It’s why I’ll wear white shoes whenever I damn please.
