2012 Kentucky Derby Party

Kentucky Derby Party at Wingtip

Saturday, May 5th, Wingtip hosted its first Kentucky Derby Party. About 20 revelers took the opportunity to put on hats, seersucker, linen, poplin, and summer dresses to make the event the most stylish of the year thus far.

Wingtip’s concierge, Jennifer, organized a great event, having the official programs shipped from Churchill Downs (they are printed Friday and can only be shipped Next Day Air; ours arrived Saturday at 11am) and coordinating an accurate food & beverage menu for the day. Of course mint juleps in pewter tumblers were a no-brainer, but those not well-versed in Derby traditions could also nibble on fried green tomatoes, hot brown, benedictine dip, pimento cheese sandwiches, thoroughbred pies (bourbon, pecans and chocolate), and a Tres Leches cake since we can’t forget it was also Cinco de Mayo!

Paul’s Hat Works brought mostly straw (and a few felt) hats, all made in San Francisco. There will be more news related to Paul’s Hat Works in the coming weeks.

Best of all, it was an exciting race. We’ll hope to see you on the first Saturday in May next year for the 139th running.
