FILM-USED “GATSBY” DORMEUIL CLOTHS AT BESPOKE

Earlier this, week Baz Luhrman’s “The Great Gatsby” opened up the 2013 Cannes film festival. We were very excited to hear that Dormeuil worked with “Gatsby” producer Catherine Martin to provide the fabric for many of the film’s Roaring 20s-style men’s suits. Although the famed and film-used Sportex (unveiled in 1922–the same year that F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book takes place) is now retired, three fabrics that were in the film are currently available through Bespoke:

From left to right: Fabric #885070, from the Naturals book, is a deep navy in a summer blend of 55% cotton, 25% linen, and 20% silk; #316259, a Royal 12 Classic, is a fancy stripe in 370g 100% wool; and #307300, from the Amadeus book, is a classic, plain black, which was selected for Gatsby’s high-sheen tuxedo.

The official word is that the first two fabrics were also worn by lead players, but we’re not sure just who wore them. In fact, we’ll take 20% off a Dormeuil-cloth suit for the first person who can conclusively identify those fabrics–885070 and 316259–in the film. Which actor/character wore them? And in what scene? (Email your sleuthing to bespoke@wingtip.com)

CAT BURGLAR CHIC

It’s not all Champagne and red carpets on the Croisette. It was reported late last night that a million bucks worth of CHopard jewels had been stolen out of a Suite Novotel Cannes Centre hotel room. The thief had drilled through a hotel wall and absconded with the safe intact (Details via the Hollywood Reporter).

So, if cat burglary is your bag, we recommend leaving the suit at home and going with this classic, time-tested get-up (in cashmere):

Both the Wingtip Gentleman’s basic turtleneck and the ribbed beanie are created by Scotland’s Johnstons of Elgin.

Get the full story on Wingtip founder Ami Arad's first pair of Robin Rotenier cufflinks (and meet Rotenier at his Wingtip trunk show this Thursday). Details...

The years blur now, but most likely in 2000, just before the dot-com bubble was about to burst, I was on a rocket ship of a software company called Blue Martini Software. I was one of the first 40 employees in July of 1999 and just a year later, the company was going public with hundreds of employees all over the world and, at its peak, a $4B (with a B) market cap.

I stopped into the Saks Men’s Store in Union Square and noticed a vitrine of cufflinks. A pair of sterling silver martini glasses were adorned with a green peridot stone to represent an olive in the martini. But Blue Martini Software’s logo featured a lemon twist. I asked a sales associate if it would be possible to order a pair with a yellow-ish stone instead of green; the next week I got an answer. I ordered ten pair to give out as gifts to co-workers plus a stud set for myself. I still have my links and stud set today.

A third-generation designer, and the first in jewelry, Robin founded his namesake line in 1993. Objects and architectural details are the core of each new design crafted in sterling silver. Robin studied jewelry design at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). In 2006, FIT awarded him the Mortimer C. Ritter Award, one of the highest honors given out by the Alumni Association. Robin Rotenier was the first jewelry designer to receive this prestigious award. In December 2008, Silver Promotion Service asked Robin to join the inaugural group of ten “Designers of Distinction.”Robin carves his models, and each piece is finished by hand, distinguishing it from machine-made items. It is Rotenier’s passion for design and attention to details that truly set his work apart.

On Thursday, May 9th, Robin Rotenier will visit our store and club from 6pm-9pm. In addition to his wide assortment of cufflinks, he’ll have some women’s jewelry on hand as well.

<strike>Next</strike> This week, Bespoke hosts Greg Walton’s hand-crafted tie pop-up. Mr. Walton will be creating ties from scratch, in folds ranging in number from three to seven. And featuring options like un-tipped and hand-rolled edges.

“I’m excited to wardrobe-build and work with [Bepsoke consultant] Erik Gavrilov in putting summer outfits together,” says Mr. Walton. “We can offer services at Wingtip that you don’t find in a normal department store.”

Mr. Walton embarked on his quest for the perfect neck tie about five years ago, initially gleaning the craft from the annals of internet wisdom. But “the important techniques aren’t taught online,” he says. “There’s lots of trial and error involved.” Over time Mr. Walton’s skills approached and then exceeded the demands of off-the-rack consumers. (That’s when we got interested!)

So, stop by Wednesday 3/27 through Saturday 3/30, 10am to 5:30pm to check out Mr. Walton at work. He will have ready-made summer ties ($130), including linen and seersucker (pictured), and he will have a variety of fabrics in tow–including grenadines, handkerchief linen–to inspire your custom tie requests ($140+, depending on the fabric and construction).

This past weekend, The New York Times ran a fascinating piece on Theodor Seuss Geisel’s hat collection, which kicked off a nationwide tour with shows at the New York Public Library and the Animazing Gallery in SoHo.

Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, used the hats as inspiration in books like “The Cat in the Hat” and “The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins,” and the man was a lifelong hat fanatic.

Per the Times: “He collected hundreds of them, plumed, beribboned and spiked, and kept them in a closet hidden behind a bookcase in his home in the La Jolla section of San Diego. He incorporated them into his personal paintings, his advertising work and his books. He even insisted that guests to his home don the most elaborate ones he could find.”

If you missed our Boxing Day trunk show with Jesse Thorn of menswear blog Put This On, check out our pocket square-centric interview at the Modern Gentleman's Blog.

Jesse Thorn from menswear blog Put This On stopped by Wingtip last week for a Boxing Day trunk show with a batch of fresh pocket squares. We sent a few questions to Jesse via email to follow-up the event:

Wingtip: What interests you about the pocket square above other men’s accessories?

Jesse Thorn: I love pocket squares for two reasons. The first is practical – they’re the difference between being dressed well and not. They demonstrate thought, and they don’t add formality. The second is that they’re sort of mysterious. Only a bit of them shows, so they can be elaborate or even pictorial while remaining an abstract burst of color in the pocket. It’s like wearing secret jewelry.

WT: What materials do you use / Where do you source your materials from?

JT: We use all sorts of materials, though only natural ones. We’ve made squares from 80-year-old Japanese silk and 70-year-old handwoven linen, but we’ve also made them from stuff printed by and for the most famous fabric companies in the world. We get some of the fabric at plain old retail fabric shops (though only a few are good enough to carry anything we’d be interested in), at estate sales, flea markets, on the internet and everywhere in between.

WT: What’s your favorite pocket square fold?

JT: I’m an advocate of a simple puff. Just grab it loosely by the middle and fold in two to get the right length. Tips up or tips down. My colleague Derek Guy just introduced me to an addition to that – if you grab it by the middle, then sort of poke that middle down (like the top of a volcano), you get a little more interest. The sort of origami folds I’m not nuts about. I think it should look forgotten.

WT: What advice do you have for selecting a pocket square’s pattern and color to match/contrast/clash with your outfit?

JT: I’d say first that white linen always looks great. Beyond that – it should be a complimentary element. It doesn’t need to match, but it should go with the rest of your clothes. I usually wear a simple tie with a patterned square and vice versa.

WT: How do people who aren’t lucky enough to attend one of your trunk shows purchase your pocket squares?

JT: We usually sell our squares through a subscription service. You can sign up for the Put This On Gentlemen’s Association and get a new square every other month by mail. Because we manufacture them (by hand here in Los Angeles), we’re able to sell them this way for about half the price of the equivalent at retail. And you get a cool little surprise in your mailbox every sixty days.

Kirby Allison: "When it comes to luxury hangers, Wood is King. Wooden hangers are everywhere - but not all wooden hangers are created equal."

Kirby Allison, whose Hanger Project supplies the hardwood hangers we use at Wingtip, recently put down a few words about the subject on his blog:

“When it comes to luxury hangers, Wood is King. Wooden hangers are everywhere – but not all wooden hangers are created equal. You can find “wooden hangers” being sold all over the internet, at The Container Store, Wal-Mart and in hotels ranging from your cheap interstate motel all the way to the Trump International Golf Links in Scotland (the latter of which we supplied).

So, what’s the difference? Well, in addition to construction, availability of sizes, and other various details, the wood used is tremendously important. Here at The Hanger Project, we take the wood we use for our hangers very seriously. From the beginning, we have always been committed to using only the best woods available.”

See the reasons wood is so important, and get the breakdown on types of hardwood over at Kirby Allison’s Hanger Project blog.
