Each Sunday morning this past August, at the Legionnaire Saloon in downtown Oakland, a reunion was being forged. Foreign Legion, made up of the lounge’s proprietor Prozack Turner, along with Marc Stretch, and Wingtip’s own Keith Griego aka DJ Design, had not performed together in a decade. But a call from one of the talent bookers at Oakland’s Hiero Day music festival set the gears in motion.
To Foreign Legion, the stage show is at least as important as the setlist. After all, this is the group that once got a management deal based on a stage stunt that involved the featherweight emcee Prozack Turner hiding in the backpack of heavyweight emcee Stretch, before the latter turned his back to the audience so the former could unzip the bag and perform a verse from the cozy confines of the backpack–still hovering three feet over the stage.

Last month, Wingtip’s very own Brandon Bigalke competed in Bombay Sapphire’s Regional Finals for the 9th Annual “World’s Most Imaginative Bartender” competition. Held at the of-the-moment Mission bar Forgery, the event was the last stop on the tour, pitting six bartenders against each other to find out who would represent San Francisco at the North American Finals.

He Who Smelt It Dealt It: Introducing Wingtip Cheesemonger Matt Gill
Every Thursday for the past year, Matt Gill has been rolling a cart around the club, full of specially selected cheeses. Some selections are tied to a specific theme, like goat’s milk or all blue cheeses or even Halloween pairings (e.g. brie and cotton candy). July was spent lasering in on all-American cheese. Other weeks, Gill just picks what he likes, what he wants to share with club members. On those days, just listen and hold on. On those days, just listen and hold on. Gill will enchant you with his ripened testimony until everything goes quiet and you sail away on the seas of cheese. His passion for cheese and its related specialty foods knows no bounds. The 50-Year Echo: Grace Cathedral Celebrates Vince Guaraldi’s “Masterwork”
In May 1965, pianist Vince Guaraldi dragged his “saloon music” up from North Beach to the top of Nob Hill, and laid it bare before the altar of the newly-completed Grace Cathedral. He had a well-oiled rhythm section backing him, and a corps of 60 voices. James Easton and S.S. Weiss from Fantasy Records only had a couple hours to set up their whole portable tape rig (couldn’t disturb the other services), but they were used to strange setups; they once recorded Guaraldi at the crowded Nighthawk from the comfort of the men’s room (no other space to set up). While the public clamored to get into the sanctuary, the dissenters were likely there, too, gathering fuel for their next death threat against the event’s mastermind, Reverend Charles Gompertz. The Oakland Urban Wine Xperience is an annual event put on by the East Bay Vintners Alliance. The 19 East Bay wineries represented are housed primarily in renovated warehouses, with grapes sourced from Oregon, Sonoma, Napa, Amador County, and the central coast of California.
